At Patrington Primary Academy, our goal is to provide every child with an excellent foundation for academic success, citizenship, and lifelong learning. Primarily, we aim for them to develop strong literacy skills and acquire the necessary knowledge to thrive in an intricate, dynamic, and competitive world. We encourage our students to be ambitious for themselves and their future endeavours.

In the realm of Design and Technology (DT), our curriculum is designed to captivate, inspire, and challenge pupils. It equips them with the knowledge and skills required to conceive, construct, and assess a diverse array of structures, mechanisms, electrical circuits, food technology, computing programming, and textiles. Additionally, our curriculum supports students in understanding DT concepts through the evaluation of work by professionals such as architects and chefs. Complemented by our Patrington ‘Golden Threads,’ this curriculum imparts lifelong skills and knowledge that will guide them through primary school, secondary school, and beyond. This is achieved by fostering a love of learning through challenging progressions and enriching, hands-on lessons.

Our DT curriculum spans the entire school, beginning with the Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) and Foundation Stage 2 (FS2) ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ curriculum. Here, children gain an understanding of local structures and foods. As they progress through the foundation stages, children enhance this knowledge by designing, making, and evaluating their creations with support from peers and staff. For instance, they design, make, and evaluate a vehicle with moving wheels and axles. This foundational knowledge serves as a crucial building block as they advance through the school.

In Key Stage 1, we deepen students’ knowledge and skills in structures, mechanisms, and food technology. Enriching enhancements add wonder, complexity, and challenge to their projects. Building on the Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 students create a vehicle with movable wheels and axles, incorporating levers and sliders. They delve deeper into project evaluation, comparing and discussing improvements.

As students progress to Key Stage 2, the curriculum continues to expand their DT knowledge and skills by building on prior learning and introducing new concepts. The introduction of new skills follows the DT theme of Design, Make, and Evaluate, helping students link fresh knowledge and skills to their existing foundation. Key Stage 2 further advances their understanding through the design, creation, and evaluation of mechanical systems. This includes constructing a vehicle with movable wheels, axles, levers, and sliders, integrating additional elements such as gears, pulleys, cams, and linkages.
